The Ethics of Digital Identity: Defending Against Mortgage Scams

During my short time working as a Customer Service Representative for a mortgage lender, I witnessed first hand how data manipulation and brand spoofing are used to exploit homeowners. Because the company I was a part of was smaller, scammers found it easier to mimic our brand to appear legitimate. They were able to execute spoofing attacks through tactics such as calling homeowners from numbers that appeared to be ours, sending physical letters with our logo, and creating fake apps. The goal of these scams was to trick borrowers into making payments or to steal their private financial, mortgage, and personal information. Often these scammers would put pressure on borrowers by claiming they had a late payment or possible impending foreclosure. Out-of-band verification is a critical security practice used to validate suspicious communications. Instead of using the contact information provided in a potential phishing message, you ‘go out of band’ by manually visiting a company’s official website or using a verified phone number to confirm the request’s legitimacy. This ensures you are communicating with the actual organization rather than an attacker. Security starts with staying skeptical. Out-of-band verification is a simple way to protect your data from phishing. If a message feels urgent or suspicious, it’s always worth the extra minute to check the official source directly.

    1. Absolutely. Understanding the risk is half the battle. Once you know how spoofing works, it’s much harder for those attacks to succeed. Thanks for the comment!

  1. Wow!! This is very informative. Recently i have received an influx of these types of scams ranging driver’s license revocation threats without payment to loan repayment requests for objects i do not own. It’s great to know there are companies and departments that are geared towards protecting their patrons. We’re all struggling in the current economy so it is sad to see there are still people out there exploiting people who deserve this type of protection. Great post!

    1. I really appreciate you sharing that, Dominique. Those license and loan scams are honestly the worst because they use fear to get people to act fast. Especially with how tough things are for everyone right now, it’s so frustrating to see people exploited like that. This is exactly why I wanted to highlight independent verification! It’s a small step that can save a lot of stress. Stay safe out there!
